My dad has an old Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop that had been in his work cupboard for a long time. It was released around 1998 and ran Windows 98. Since the OS is nearly 20 years old, it’s clear it won’t get much help anymore. I’m looking for a super-light operating system that can handle basic tasks like browsing the web and editing MS documents. The machine has a Pentium II processor (probably around 350MHz, though Windows XP says it’s only 199MHz), 128MB of RAM, and a 6GB hard drive. It uses a PCMCIA card for internet access, which might not work if the OS doesn’t support it. The battery only lasts about 12 seconds. I’m just doing this for fun and a bit of laughs—please suggest any possible solutions!
Windows Vista offers the most minimal performance among all options.
Vista Basic is the most basic edition available, needing a 800Mhz CPU and 512MB of memory.
Sure, I was considering a Linux-based system, but there are just too many options available.
Older notebooks struggle with running most software except Windows, especially when using Pentium II or certain hardware setups. TinyCore and Alpine Linux work well on older systems because they require less than 200MB of RAM after installing drivers if needed. I run TinyCore on an Intel Atom 230.
Take a glance at Slax OS—it looks more appealing compared to Tiny Core in terms of the user interface.
