AudioAudio becomes distorted when connected to a monitor.
I’m facing a tricky issue. On my desk I have several devices: two monitors, a laptop with dock, a desktop, and a mixer. Whenever I connect a monitor to the laptop (or its dock), the audio from that laptop becomes distorted—no matter which monitor is used or whether video or audio is output. The desktop works fine, and using the mixer confirmed the problem was only with the laptop. Removing the monitors from the desktop eliminates the noise. So, connecting both computers to a monitor causes the issue. Using the mixer doesn’t help.
If I disconnect the monitors from the desktop, the noise disappears. That suggests the problem is tied to the audio path between the laptop and the mixer. Trying to bypass the mixer has no impact.
The situation gets more confusing: I use earbuds with a mic and old-style Y-splitters to separate them. Plugging in the mic side stops the buzz, but it comes back when I connect the mic to the iPad. I can switch between the iPad, laptop, or desktop without changing the noise. The same happens if I plug the mic into the laptop or desktop. It seems the issue is with the audio routing through the mixer.
When everything except the video cable from the monitor is unplugged (even power stays on), the noise persists—though it gets louder when power is applied. It might sound like a whine, similar to coil whine but less consistent. You can listen to a sample: Weird noise.m4a
In short, connecting both computers to a monitor and linking the mic from earbuds to any device causes the problem. The mixer doesn’t resolve it. The noise appears only with the laptop, not the desktop, and switching between devices stops it. It’s likely the audio path through the mixer is the culprit.
