Hi, I’m dealing with a persistent audio problem that hasn’t been fixed. My dedicated desktop microphone stopped functioning one day during a Discord session. Even after reseating the 3.5mm jack, it didn’t work. I ended up purchasing a new mic, but it continued to produce static noise. I attempted to reinstall audio drivers, cleared the device manager, and even tried generic software, but nothing helped. I suspected the issue might be with the audio ports on my motherboard, so I decided to upgrade it and perform a fresh Windows 10 installation, yet the problem persisted.

The microphone isn’t muted.

Solutions I’ve attempted:
1. Tested the mic on other devices – it worked.
2. Ran diagnostic tools; set up input device with spoken text, but audio failed.
3. Reinstalled audio drivers, uninstalled the audio device in Device Manager, reinstalled again, and used generic software.
4. Used an external USB sound card – same result.
5. Tried a USB headset with the mic, but static appeared even when muted.
6. Adjusted privacy settings, turned microphone off and back on.
7. Used my phone as a Bluetooth mic – it worked, though sound quality was poor.

Old System
Windows 10
i5 4690
24GB RAM
Asus B85M-G motherboard
AMD RX5600 XT

New System
Windows 10
i7 9700F
16GB RAM
Intel b365 motherboard
AMD RX5600 XT

I’m also using standard Xiaomi earphones with a built-in mic, but I can’t confirm if that’s the cause either.

What model of case are you attaching this microphone to, and what is the exact type of microphone? There have been problems with cases that have all-in-one TRRS jacks, causing compatibility issues when using mics with TRS connectors. It might be necessary to use an adapter, but we need the specific case and microphone details to provide accurate guidance. For more details, check the differences between TRRS and TRS connections.

what do you mean by this. It's a standard mic with a 3.5mm trs jack, the older mic used trs if i'm correct (the jacket with the two rings). The problem also persists over USB headsets so i don't know if this could be the issue

Hi, just wanted to confirm your point. I looked deeper into the trrs and trs, and the mic I purchased—a reliable one I tested on my phone—actually has a four-pole design instead of the two-pole 3.5mm jack you expected. Thanks again!
