Hi everyone,
I've been using a Ryzen 3600x for years and it's performed well. Recently, I've increased my workload to include audio production and film scoring, which often require extensive sample libraries, plugins, and effect chains. So far it hasn't caused any major problems, but my projects are becoming larger in scope. In the future, I intend to tackle bigger orchestral scores, and I'm concerned the 3600x might slow down.

I understand we're moving toward AM5, but I wanted to hear others' opinions about upgrading from a 3600x to another AM4 CPU before those chips become scarce. I'd rather avoid having to replace the motherboard and RAM in a few years if I end up needing a newer socket.

I thought about the 5800x or x3d, but they seem more common in gaming contexts, which isn't my main use.

If your motherboard is adequate, choose the 5800xt (its name can be confusing) or the 5950x.

Motherboard: b450 tomahawk. BIOS not confirmed, but updatable if needed.
Ram: 32 GB
Storage: x2 SSD, x1 HDD
GPU: 1660ti
Power supply: EVGA 700W (model uncertain, but a decent unit)
Chassis: O11 Dynamic
Operating system: Windows 10
Monitor: two ASUS models, 1080p
Software: Reaper, Reason 11, VCV Rack, various plugins/VSTs (e.g., Hollywood East/West, Spitfire Audio).
My main concern is handling many virtual instruments and effects, especially with large sets. Currently I manage 10-15 at a time, but I’m not often using more than that.
I’m based in Canada and like to purchase locally. Budget flexibility is possible, though I aim for $300-400.

I believe the person in question might be considering the 5900XT, which offers 16 cores and 32 threads. It runs roughly 3% slower than the 5950X, and on Amazon the price gap doesn’t seem significant enough to justify the purchase. Worth noting is that if a 5800X or XT model becomes available, they tend to be quite affordable, and at 8 cores/16 threads it would still provide a solid upgrade over the 3600X. I’m not confident about keeping the existing power supply, but it might be better to wait until there’s a noticeable improvement in the graphics card.
