Attempting to stop the processor from getting too hot
Hey everyone, welcome! I’m just starting out on the forums and I wanted to share my experience. I’m from the Midwest in the U.S., where it can get really warm. My office is upstairs in an older house with not great insulation. Recently I installed a new PC and am dealing with temperatures that feel a bit high, even though the system isn’t throttling much after trying some adjustments.
I’m planning to upgrade my cooling setup later, but for now I’m working with what I have. It’s getting quite hot, so I’m looking for ways to lower temps quickly. Here’s what I’ve done so far:
- Set case and CPU fans to run at least 50% all the time, and speed them up faster than the automatic curve suggests (like reaching 100% at 65°C)
- Turned off AMD Core Performance Boost, which helped a lot when temps were around 23°C
- Used the MSI B550 A-PRO with BIOS version A.B0 from 8/11/2022
- Installed an AMD Wraith Stealth cooler (paste applied)
- Added a 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM at 3200MHz XMP
- Added a MSI Ventus2x GeForce RTX 3060
- Mounted a 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD with an EVGA 650 GT (80+ Gold)
- Needed some advice on reducing temps in the short term

I don’t grasp your reasoning, because enabling CPU boost while it can throttle offers more performance than completely disabling it. The Wraith Stealth is quite simple; a solid aftermarket cooler like the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 would work better if your case is large enough. You shouldn’t be experiencing problems at just 23°C ambient temperature. Does your case feature a good air intake, such as a mesh front?
I'm considering the Corsair P4000D case. My cooler choice is between the Noctua NH-U14S and the one you recommended. I'm trying to weigh the options. The decision came down to the X model since I need more headroom for livestreaming, which I always planned for. I didn't anticipate how bad the wraith stealth performance would be.
My thought is keeping things cooler so I don’t throttle. I understand the professor can handle it, but I prefer not to hit 95 degrees. Performance isn’t the main concern. Even without CPB it still works well enough. I’m just finding it hard to run my high-end emulation now. That’s not a big deal either way. I didn’t mind turning it off. The Wraith stealth isn’t great, as mentioned before. I always wanted a better cooler, but right now I can’t afford the money. It’s probably above 23 degrees. I’m guessing since I don’t have a thermostat in my office. It wouldn’t be surprising if it got much hotter. The case is a Corsair P4000D
Which fan profile are you employing? It might be that the BIOS is configured in Quiet/Silent mode, minimizing airflow. I prefer using FanControl to create hybrid curves that adjust case fans according to GPU and CPU temps.
