Asus Zephyrus G16 (2024) issue: M.2 NVMe SSD port disconnected automatically
Hi everyone. I recently purchased an Asus Zephyrus G16 with an RTX 4080 graphics card. I was using a Corsair MP300 SSD from my old laptop, and it functioned well at first. During game installation, it vanished unexpectedly. It wasn’t present in the disk manager or BIOS. Initially, I suspected a hardware fault, so I transferred it back to my previous machine, which resolved the issue completely. It appears Asus has a port protection mechanism that halts SSD operation if it touches certain pads near the left fan. To prevent this, I placed thermal padding under the SSD and didn’t fully secure it. Now it works perfectly. I’m curious if anyone knows a more lasting fix or if you’ve encountered similar problems with other SSDs in contact with those areas. The other SSD is also touching those points but it’s still fine. Could the aluminum casing be the cause? Thanks ahead for your help.
I see these as surface mount inductors. It's likely the SSD near them creates some interference, probably in its circuitry. A metal foil might help block the signal. If I'm mistaken and they're capacitors, poor electrical contact between them could cause a short with the SSD. The best fix would be to place a thin insulated metal sheet on both sides using non-conductive tape, which should reduce interference and prevent shorts. Good luck!
Thanks for your feedback. It seems they’re not traditional capacitors but rather have a soft material beneath the metal and likely some surface mount conductors acting as a cushion. Instead of using thin metal sheets, I used a small strip of electrical tape on the SSD where it touches the pads. While inspecting, I saw exposed solder at the contact points, which probably led to power loss in the port. Apologies if my explanation got technical—I’d appreciate it if you could confirm if I interpreted correctly. Thanks again!
