You're facing issues with the M.2 installation on your Samsung 980 Pro. It seems the cover screws might be too short or the M.2 slot is too narrow due to the heat sink. The videos you watched for the lower slots (Gen 3) likely worked because they fit better. Double-check the screw size and try using the bottom two slots instead.

the current year is 2280, so verify your standoff location if there are multiple boards. if a heatsink is present, the motherboard's heatsink won't fit. you can either take off the M.2 heatsink or skip using the board's heatsink—either option should work. It would be helpful to know the exact model of your motherboard.

The two screws on the heat sink aren't fully inserted, so I'm unsure if I should search for a longer one. From what I've seen in the manual and videos, they don't use the area above the GPU. K

Is the 980 your type of heatsink? As I mentioned earlier, the M.2 will not fit if the M.2 has its own heatsink.

Is there any way to remove the heat sink from the M.2 slot? I’d prefer the motherboard’s heat sink instead.

Yes, it can be taken off easily since it's secured with adhesive. A plastic pry tool or guitar pick should suffice—just confirm first. If the SSD is brand new, consider returning it and getting the non-heatsink version, which is what I’d choose, particularly if you bought it locally. Edit: I just verified the specs, and all ports are compatible with PCIe 4.0. Only one slot supports PCIe 5.0, so switching won’t affect performance.

I used the lower compartments. I noticed two screws, but I didn’t feel like handling them. Thank you for spending the time reviewing and assisting me.

I tested the lower slot but it doesn’t fit. I might be able to install the screw on the opposite side or skip it entirely. It seems unlikely they’d design a board that can’t accommodate an M.2 with a heatsink. The only area with sufficient space is the bottom right corner. Should I just insert one screw, leave the cover off, or attempt to detach the heatsink?
