He’s dealing with a situation where the motherboard failed after a game spark, and Asus is refusing to repair it. They claim it was user damage, but he hasn’t touched the side panel since July 2019—only opened it briefly after taking photos. The company has voided his warranty. Your perspective on this case is welcome. Edit: added that they asked him to cover $276 CAD for repairs. Updated May 18, 2020 by Brian9008

It's positioned over the M.2 port yet the PCIe connector sits just next to it. A spark occurred from the capacitor, causing the entire system to power down.

Reach out again and assure them there was no damage from the user, especially since nothing has been touched since 2019. If they claim physical harm came from the M.2 mount installation, it seems the part was supplied by them—making it more like a defect from Asus. Consider contacting local authorities to explore consumer protection options that might assist your friend. The issues with Asus RMA and support often require specialized knowledge of PC components and solid evidence; otherwise, you may face complications.

Would fixing this be challenging without Asus handling it through RMA?

It varies depending on the situation. The part holding the screw for the M.2 drive seems misaligned, so adjustments are needed. The damaged piece just above it can be swapped out easily as long as the surrounding parts like contact pads and wiring remain intact. You'll need a compatible replacement, but locating one should be straightforward.
