Hey guys, Let me start by saying this is not a new issue, I have been plagued by it for over a year, but have a work around in place. I am just more curious if anyone else experienced this and maybe have a solution that isn't downgrading my BIOS. The System (SilverStoner): CPU: AMD 2400G Motherboard: Asus x470-i Gaming Video 1: Radeon RX560 4GB descrete Video 2: Vega 11 iGPU PSU: Corsair SFF 450 modular SSD: Kingston Predator 240gb Case: SilverStone HTPC SFF ITX The issue: I updated the BIOS on the motherboard, from whatever the earliest version was to something newer because it said it had improved memory support. It was my HTPC, and I should have known not to update anything that isn't HTPC related. Anyway after this I noticed when I booted back to Windows, I had a red X in the task bar next to the speaker. And sure enough, my system showed that I had no Audio input / output options. I thought it was a driver corruption, so I re-installed the AMD adrenaline software and latest drivers. No change. I wiped the drive and fresh installed Windows 10, thinking it was a Windows corruption. Since all my media is on my unRAID server, I didn't care too much about a quick re-install (as a tech I can be lazy when it comes to troubleshooting my stuff and will go full nuclear before finding the little thing that is wrong on my systems). The reinstall of Windows went flawlessly, but when I got to the desktop, even before AMD software was loaded, I noticed I had that red X indicating my problem was still there. At this point I thought it was an issue with the HDMI on my AVR and directly connected the HTPC into my TV's spare HDMI port, no change. Frustrated, I decided to reboot into the BIOS and enable the onboard Vega 11 graphics and plugged my HDMI into that. Well wouldn't you know it, I had sound when I got to Windows. So I wondered if the Video card had somehow been damaged by the BIOS update? Which prompted me to test the RX560 in another systems. In my test bed (Intel based), it loaded up fine into Windows with audio. I then took the video card from test bed (nvidia quadro 620 2GB low profile) and slapped it in the HTPC, and sure enough I had sound from HDMI on that card. So I thought it must be a new BIOS "feature", so I went digging into the BIOS to make sure I disabled ALL iGPU stuff including the stuff found in the newly available AMD CBS tab. Rebooted back into Windows with the RX560 and was heartbroken to see that the sound was still showing a red X. That's when I busted out the Google Machine and found this link: https://community.amd.com/thread/239954 The reason I was so upset was because I only purchased and installed this discrete card (RX560) was because it was required for 4K HDR streaming with Netflix. AMD being the wonderful company that they are did not include the PlayReady 3.0 DRM in their Vega drivers, which is required for 4k/HDR streaming. They included the driver support for PlayReady 3.0 on their older RX4xx and 5xx as well as their newer RX5xxx cards but not their Vega models or Radeon VII. Super duper. Their drivers age like fine wine some say... but that seems to be only true for gaming. Also the picture quality when connected to the RX560 was much better, something with the Vega driver causes the display to be a tad less vibrant (used to be much worse, especially if you were watching an HDR movie, but have since been addressed). My Workaround: I leave my RX560 installed and enable iGPU (HybridMode) in BIOS. I set my main video card in BIOS to be iGPU and I plug the HDMI into the onboard HDMI port. In Windows, I use the Graphics Settings option from the Display Settings page in Windows (not AMD's Driver) and set all the apps that I use on a regular to use the "high performance, discrete GPU" option. While clunky to get setup, from my testing it seems to work, except for when it doesn't. Some times Netflix will present me with 4k and HDR options, other times it will not. Long story short, I gave up on this system about 4 months ago and it is just collecting dust. I ended up getting a Nvidia Shield TV for my "HTPC" needs. But today I dusted it off and was tinkering around to see if I could get it to work the way I wanted. (No dice)... I mean, even if I do get it to work I doubt that I will ever use it for HTPC needs now that I have the Shield, but I do still like to use it for a LAN box to take to my buddy's place for some light gaming. The games we play at the LANs are not AAA titles at all, it's more of just a bunch of work buddies hanging around playing old school stuff like Unreal Tournament 2004, Quake III, wreckfest, etc. Not that I need HDMI audio for this, as I use a USB wireless headset. Has anyone else experience something similar to me? If so, were you able to fix it without flashing back to old BIOS? Or is this just something I am going to have to live with and is just a quirk of going AMD in the first place. Thanks in advance.
