Hello, I intend to purchase a new laptop for my university use, mainly for MATLAB simulations. This time, I prefer the 4th generation AMD mobile APU over the 10th generation Intel mobile CPU. So far, the most powerful AMD APU within my budget is the ASUS Tuf A15 featuring a Ryzen 9 4900H and GTX1660Ti (I suspect the RTX2060 variant isn’t necessary). The TUF A15 appears to have significant issues, and Asus believes its innovative design can't be enhanced further. At this stage, switching to another brand like TongFang seems the only option without moving to Intel.

they must ensure compatibility via their widget, and if not, they should collaborate with you on a return or replacement.

Despite this, some viewers defended the model in those areas. First, the Tuf A15 is built for military-grade durability. To meet these standards, manufacturers must restrict foreign substances from entering the device, which often leads to a smaller air intake. This adjustment sacrifices the cooling system for greater robustness. One commenter explained that they intentionally chose a military-grade unit to work in demanding construction environments, even though it meant spending more. Second, while a superior screen with enhanced colour accuracy and faster response could be beneficial, it would raise production costs. For my needs, using the laptop for MATLAB is sufficient, so a robust cooling setup and screen aren’t essential. Besides TongFang, I see Acer Nitro 5, Dell G5 SE, MSI Bravo 15, Lenovo 5, and HP (possibly Pavillion Gaming or Omen) offer Ryzen 4000 series APUs. However, my current options are limited to Ryzen 7 4800H or up until Ryzen 9 4900H. If I must opt for the Ryzen 9 4900H, the ASUS Tuf A15 remains my only choice. If the Tuf A15 isn’t ideal, an alternative would be the Acer Predator Helios 300 2020. Its i7-10750H processor may lag behind the Ryzen 9 in multi-core tasks, and its RAM is slower than the A15’s (2999MHz vs 3200MHz). Still, it offers better cooling and a superior display, even if the price difference isn’t significant.

they're among the three or four NAND OEMs (micron), and the sole manufacturer that produces the DRAM themselves. Likely the most trustworthy option for compatibility besides the maker's specifications

R9 and R7 provide eight cores and sixteen threads, the main distinction being clock speed—this won’t be noticeable on the A15 since the CPU throttles due to heat. There’s no universal standard for "military grade"; it mainly serves as marketing. If Asus prioritized dust and impact resistance, they should offer an IP rating similar to rugged laptops, just like intended. Regarding Intel 8-core models, choosing an R7 or R9 in a high-temperature setup is risky; you’d need to manually reduce power limits to prevent overheating.

Tuf A15 isn't ideal, but I'm still considering the AMD 4000 series APU. I'd likely stick with the R7 4800H from Acer Nitro 5, Lenovo Legion 5 15, or the TongFang ODM. The MSI Bravo 15 seems questionable based on the YouTube videos I've watched, especially those showing unboxed hardware. HP (Omen and Pavillion gaming) might offer variants with the AMD 4000 series APU, though they're not yet available in my region (Malaysia). Could you confirm the model number for the Intel 8-core processor? If it's outside my budget, I'd probably opt for the Acer Predator Helios 300 2020 (i7-10750H with RTX2060) as a more affordable alternative. Personally, I lean toward the MSI GP65/GL65 lineup, but prices in my country have risen since around 2017.
