ASUS ROG RTX 3080 paired with Ryzen 5900HX is not performing well.
Hello, I'm experiencing some difficulties with my Asus ROG Strix RTX 3080 R9 5900HX. Before explaining the issue, here are the details of my machine: Processor – Ryzen 9 5900HX; GPU – RTX 3080 with 16GB GDDR6 memory, 32GB DDR4 at 3200MHz; Laptop age is just one week, so the thermal paste should still be fresh. Additional notes: Performance drops sometimes during gaming. Before games, the clock runs smoothly around 1545MHz. Once a game starts (like Forza Horizon 4), it instantly lowers to 800-900MHz. In Warframe it falls between 400-500MHz, and The Crew 2 reaches 1200-1300MHz. After stopping games, the GPU stabilizes at 1545MHz. Initially, I assumed thermal issues were the cause, so I changed the profile to manual in Asus Armoury Crate, boosted fan speed, and set the base clock offset to zero for both memory and base clock. Temperatures stayed below 75°C, ruling out thermal throttling. The most unusual part was that restarting the laptop and launching games resolved the problem temporarily. Steps taken so far: updated drivers, checked NVIDIA Control Panel settings (Power Management Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance), increased fan speeds, lowered base clock offset. The best part is a restart fixes it for a while. I’m hoping for a more lasting solution. Thanks ahead for your help!
The sensor detects elevated temperatures. Please ensure the laptop is powered on for accurate readings.
Thanks for the input Jurrunio! I verified both scenarios: bottlenecked and no bottleneck modes. I tested each session for 5 minutes before measuring peak temperatures. No major variations were observed. In fact, the temperatures were slightly lower during the bottlenecked test. *Note*: I'm using a laptop connected to power. Bottlenecked CPU settings: Drive: GPU: No bottleneck mode: Drive: GPU. Overall, thermal throttling doesn't seem to be the issue unless a sensor isn't reporting in HWInfo.
What version of Performance Mode is active on your Windows? It seems similar to the Power Settings menu. In the advanced Power Plan settings, you can adjust energy-saving options for components like PCIe and CPU. Consider increasing those settings and enabling high-performance mode.

I've tried several alternatives mainly through the Nvidia control panel. I switched the preferred graphics card to an Nvidia processor and set OpenGL rendering to use the NVidia GeForce RTX 3080. In Program Settings, I forced the NVidia GPU as the preferred one for Forza Horizon 4. Using MSI Afterburner to check GPU usage showed no bottlenecks—just a slight increase in FB usage of about one-third when there was no constraint. Unfortunately, these changes didn't fully resolve the issue. Tomorrow will be another attempt

Your performance controls are quite restricted, likely because of Windows 10 Home Edition. It seems the settings have been significantly altered. When using afterburner during gaming, does Afterburner display the graphics card usage? I worry that the system isn't properly allocating resources, and your graphics card might be idling unnecessarily.
Thank you for the input. The performance is mostly effective during gameplay, though the main clock runs at a relatively low frequency (about 990 MHz).
