ASUS or Gigabyte motherboard compatible with i7 12700K
Hi everyone, I've decided to upgrade my system by purchasing a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM. I'm planning to get an i7 12700k and need recommendations for a motherboard that can handle high CPU usage—around 90% to 100%—especially when rendering or compiling code. I want something that lasts a long time. I plan to use 32GB of DDR4 RAM and will go with a Z690 chipset board. After some quick research, I found ASUS and Gigabyte boards at similar prices. The ASUS ROG Strix Z690-A Gaming Wi-Fi and the Gigabyte Z690 Aorus Pro are options I saw. I also checked out the ASUS Prime Z690-A, which seems to work well for me so far. Some people mention mixed reviews about ASUS boards, while others say Gigabyte isn’t great. I currently have an ASUS Prime Z370-A and haven’t had any issues. I’m looking for advice on which option is better and any experiences others have had with these brands. Thanks!
I would consider the Gigabyte or MSI Z690 Tomahawk with WiFi and DDR4 RAM.
When choosing a DDR4 board, steer clear of Gigabyte products as they often cause memory compatibility problems. Their DDR5 options perform well, and the Aorus Pro stands out as a top value choice in that category. For DDR4 setups, running at 3600MHz without special memory kits in Gear 1 can work if you don’t need peak speeds. If high memory speeds aren’t essential, this board offers solid performance but lacks the upgrade potential for modern processors like Alder Lake. Among the available options, the Strix-A is a decent choice, though the price jump to around $130 isn’t justified by major improvements. The MSI Z690-A Pro delivers strong features at a reasonable cost and looks appealing. Many users report issues with various manufacturers—Gigabyte, ASUS, MSI, ASRock, Biostar, and even EVGA. If you’ve experienced problems with any brand, it’s wise to investigate further. In my experience, Gigabyte boards have been the most problematic, so I avoid them unless necessary. That said, their Z690 models are much more reliable, and if you’re planning an Alder Lake build, consider the Aorus Pro, Aero G, or MSI Unify-X as top picks. ASUS boards usually come at a premium price, making them less attractive compared to comparable alternatives that cost $20 or less.
