I've received your ASUS RT-AC86U router and want to upgrade its firmware to Merlin. You've downloaded the file twice, but instead of a .trx file, you got a .w file named RT-AC86U_384.15_0_cferom_ubi.w. This is confusing because the usual format is .trx. It might be a version update or a different release. Double-check the official documentation or contact ASUS support to confirm the correct file type and steps. Avoid upgrading if unsure to prevent damaging your router.

Follow the guidance in the attached document to update your firmware. Given that ASUS includes braincells in its firmware team, reprogramming their routers is quite challenging. Refer to the installation guide on GitHub for detailed steps.

I see you're having trouble with the flashing process. The files are typically .trx, not .w. This might be confusing for you.

The HND system employs its own firmware structure, making the .w format standard for this model.

Thanks for the update. That’s everything I needed to understand. The firmware was updated and everything is functioning properly.
