ASUS DARK HERO / random Q code 00...
This week I experienced a sudden crash on my PC with Qcode 00. The screen goes black and the fans run at full speed. I have to shut it down on the power supply unit. After restarting, it boots normally, but I’m concerned something is wrong. I noticed a code suggesting the issue might be related to the CPU, PSU, or motherboard. I don’t want to test anything with another motherboard or CPU. Initially, I thought it could be due to power settings, but the minimum state at a lower percentage still triggered the problem during gameplay. The board is a dark hero crosshair VIII, an AMD 5900X, and I’ve used the same settings for two years without any issues—PBO and Curve Optimizer both working well. I reset the OC settings to run it in stock mode to check if the problem was there, but it still happens intermittently: once while playing a game, once while working on Excel. Is my CPU or motherboard failing? Could it be software or BIOS-related, given that everything seemed fine before? Also, could removing the CMOS battery temporarily fix the issue? Fair amount of chatter on it on Asus's own forums...dying CPU, bent pins, power delivery to CPU (00 means no CPU detected. Probably unlikely on the bent pins since it's been working. Some mention of CMOS as well. Couldn't hurt to clear CMOS, then try running it again without any other changes to see if it fails again. Tried lightly jostling the box to see if it shuts off? Got the latest BIOS (04/29 2022) that supposedly improves system stability)? Could be tricky since I'm using an older p5q from over a decade ago. If I adjust the RAM timing slightly without it becoming unstable, but not too much, then I have to restart it. Once the PSU is off and it waits for discharge (mouse lights off), I power it back on and it restarts normally in BIOS (like 1520 7-9-7 works first, but 7-9-6-9 boots fine the next time). The pattern here is very similar, so I should check my RAM first. Disabling XMP and letting it run straight might help unless there are faulty chips or slots. Bad BIOS can also cause this—sometimes I need to clean with 99% IPA and even try a crossflash or BIOS update. Also, make sure the CPU isn’t plugged in at all; those issues usually stick around after resets. Using a PCI debug card is why I can see these codes clearly.
It's unusual since you've never had problems before. The new AIO changed, and I learned an overtight cooler might be the cause. Checking the software argus monitor could also be an issue. You're still on BIOS 3801—should you upgrade it? The problem showed up once on desktop and again during gaming after a few CB20 runs, but not otherwise. Your CCD1 is warm at startup (80°C+), which is normal for a short time. If it stays hot, consider removing the CMOS battery and redoing your overclock.
