I own some PSUs from my old 8-year-old PC. Right now I’m struggling to find a good one until Friday. Maybe I can connect this one without any problems. It’s an FSP Raider 650W, which worked fine with my AMD FX 8120 and Radeon HD 7790 for eight years. Now that the old PC is in the box, I’m thinking about swapping it out for a new PSU and installing it on the Rampage V. That PSU is a low-end model, but I’m unsure if it will work. I’m currently without a job or money, so I just want to know if it’ll function properly.

I recall this PC problem after the first build—it kept rebooting with the RGB fans flashing on and off. I wasn’t sure what to do, so I took it to a technician who initially thought the issue was caused by a faulty connection between the RGB controller and the fans (Sharkoon Gaming Nightshark case). At that time, another technician connected a 2x4 pin from the PSU to an 8-pin EPS connector on the board. This second technician spent three hours diagnosing the problem, testing the controller with a multimeter, and eventually unplugging all cables one by one. He explained that the correct method involves splitting the EPS signal (4-pin to 8-pin) and connecting another 4-pin from the EPS cable to the +12V2 pin on the board. Once that was done, the RGB fans worked again and the PC booted up normally. When I asked why it worked that way, he admitted he didn’t understand and suggested something with the RGB fans or controller might be affecting stability. He also mentioned uncertainty about the PSU, saying it could be the cause. I’m considering removing the faulty PSU to test with a stress test like AIDA64. If the PC still fails to restart, I suspect the controller itself is the problem. Although I’m not sure about the PSU quality, I might have to replace it. All 850W PSUs are currently out of stock, and the only options I have are 650-700W models, which are quite pricey. In the photos, you can see the controller card removed from the SATA power and the EPS connectors arranged on the board.

Ordered a power supply unit but must hold off until Saturday. I looked up the issue online and many suggested it might be a motherboard problem. I became very worried last night because I bought a new PSU for a significant amount, and what if it fails? My PC could become unusable, especially under high load, since I can't find compatible parts for its old socket. I also won’t be able to sell it because it won’t work properly. I just hope the problem is with the PSU itself. I planned to remove the PSU from my HX1200i today, but I remember that taking it out might damage the motherboard. So I gave up. I’ll wait for the PSU to arrive and then test it out of the case. I’ll update you as soon as it’s back.

The motherboard might behave strangely after removal if the PSU is taken out, but as long as the battery remains functional, the issue should be minimal. It would have been wise to check with a 1kw unit before buying, especially since you already have a PSU available for testing.
