I am working on an upgrade project. The setup includes an Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 board, FX 6300 black edition, and gskill 2133 RAM. Performance is stable even when turbo is enabled. I’m trying to determine if the processor can reach 4.1 GHz and if the RAM timings match the specifications. When using CPU settings like DOCP, I can adjust the RAM timing to 2133, but other times it gives different values such as 1728 or 2033 MHz. It doesn’t allow me to set timings at 10,12,12,31. The chipset seems to suggest 11,13,13,?—probably no major change. Now Speccy reports a RAM speed of 1070, which is better than the 600-800 I was getting before. However, I’m not very familiar with OC settings.

I’m also thinking about switching to a higher clocked CPU like an 8350 or 8370. Any advice from others who have similar issues? Would upgrading to a faster CPU really make a noticeable difference? I don’t play games on this system, but I value performance close to instant for tasks like browsing.

Thanks for reading.

The memory controller features one controller and supports two memory channels. It is compatible with DDR3-1866 memory and offers a maximum bandwidth of 29.9 GB/s.

So as I am reading that, and I appreciate the link, good stuff. I am lead to believe that the 6300 will only use 1866mhz RAM? I do have a brick wall in the room that that systems is in, so as I constantly try to increase the ram speed, I can lean over and bang my head against the brick wall, and more or less, get a similar result
Even if Speccy is saying 1070mhz, which we know is halved in DDR, the processor can't, or won't utilize it? And is this true of all FX series AMD's. I do have an I5 recent build that I am on now, and was trying to build up an older system (the AMD), to see if I could get it to run as quickly as the i5. Apples to oranges I guess. Although the AMD is much better with a new motherboard and the change from an Athlon 630 to this fx-6300, just wondering if a 8350 or 8370 might bring her that much closer to my i5 experience? 6300 is returnable to Amazon for about 2 more weeks, but will another hundred towards a 8350 or 8370 bring much to the table if able to OC it?
