CPU: AMD FX8320
GPU: EVGA geforce gtx 780 acx
I previously owned an MSI 970A G46 board that failed after roughly four years. Now I’m considering a replacement but am struggling to decide between these two options.
Online discussions suggest my old board had issues with the VRM when running a 125W processor, so I’m focusing on longevity this time.
The gaming graphics card offers vibrant colors and 3.1 USB ports, which is appealing, but it uses a 970 chipset. The GB board comes with a 990 chipset, lacks color support, and doesn’t have USB 3.1 ports. I’m trying to determine which offers better durability and performance, and whether the chipset variation matters or is just irrelevant.
I’ve noticed that the GB mainboard, the 990FXA UD3 R5, has many negative reviews, which is concerning because if I were stuck without access to Gigabyte or ASUS support, I wouldn’t want to have to return it for repair.
I know this question has been asked before, but so far no one has mentioned the chipset difference. I’d like to understand what the key differences are and how they impact the overall system, rather than just being overclocking tools.

The newer features in AURA are fine. You asked what "fine" means, since the older model might seem different. Or did you mean to confirm compatibility with your processor despite the older chipset?

It's a newer 970 with the updated FEATURES. If your not OC the Aura is a solid choice.

It's a newer 970 with updated features. If you're not original, the Aura remains a strong option. The chip is newer than most 970 models but still older than the 990. Given the lightning and good colors, I'm leaning toward it, though I wonder if its longevity compares to the Gigabyte version or if the differences are minor.
