my mom’s laptop from 2010 runs slow, so I’m planning an upgrade. it has an i5-520m cpu and produces about 35 watts of heat. I’m looking for something faster but not too hot—ideally under 40 watts. I’m open to buying from any site, as long as the price stays below $15.

The laptop is about to be discussed in terms of chip options. An i5-480M or i5-560M offers a reasonable budget upgrade.

If she’s just browsing the web, swapping the HDD for an SSD and updating the OS might be enough. Based on what I’ve seen, most folks only need those changes unless they’re doing more than that.
