Assistance with internet and port forwarding setup
Hi, in simple terms I reside at a military installation. We get fast internet (up to 500mbps) for free, but it’s heavily limited and blocks certain sites like Steam. Plus, every time my device reconnects I have to log in again, which becomes annoying over time. Because of this, I and a few teammates bought a 4G SIM card for £34 a month or about $43 USD. It offers unlimited data without throttling, which suits us well. The signal is strong at our base, giving roughly 150mbps download and 25mbps upload. The main issue is managing IP addresses on a 4G network. Since the setup uses our ISP’s private IP, there’s no public or fixed address option. We tried adding a VPN to our router for a static public IP, but it still blocks port forwarding. This stops us from accessing remote tools like remote desktop or our media server from anywhere. We’re hoping to find a VPN that provides a permanent IP and allows port forwarding. Any suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!
You likely didn’t need a VPN. Many routers, like 4G hotspots, offer Dynamic DNS. It lets you maintain a consistent domain name even when your IP address changes, and it also preserves port forwarding. Verizon Example Results can differ based on your Mobile Network and 4G hotspot.
