Hi guys,
I just purchased a new PC with these specifications: CPU Intel Core i5-6500 Skylake 3.2GHz, motherboard ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming, 8GB DDR4 RAM at 2133MHz, ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Strix Gaming, and a Cooler Master Seidon 120M cooler. I'm attempting to overclock it to reach around 4000MHz, but any adjustments in the BIOS cause a black screen during reboot and an error message about the overclock failing. I have the latest BIOS for my motherboard (version 1904) and followed several guides without success. I'm completely new to today's CPUs and motherboards, and my previous PC used an LGA775 Core2Duo CPU. What mistakes am I making? Why do higher frequencies not work for me?

The non-K Intel CPUs are not meant to be overclocked (this includes the i5 6500). With Z170 some manufacturers made UEFIs that supported "unofficial overclocking", but there you have no guarantee you can even get 1MHz above stock. These features have since been removed as well because Intel does not approve of this.
tl;dr If you want functional overclocking you need an i5 6600k.

Ok. Then I will return my 6500 and get the 6600K.
Thank you so much!
