Hello, I currently run an older Mac Mini from 2007 with Ubuntu installed. I’m planning to switch to a lighter Linux distribution like Lubuntu for better web browsing performance. The machine has just one core and only 2GB of RAM, and Ubuntu isn’t running well on it. I’m hoping a Lubuntu copy will improve its capabilities. I have no idea how to install the new OS or set up the hard drive—Mac’s system doesn’t show USB options properly, even though it’s actually Ubuntu. I’m very basic with Linux and don’t want to complicate things. Do you think I should use a bootloader other than GRUB? Is that correct? Also, would it be better to install Lubuntu or try a Windows XP installation instead?

I could use that or something similar like Retropi. It might become outdated soon.

True Windows XP is quite outdated, and its security isn’t very strong by today’s standards.

Lubuntu functions well, yet accessing BIOS/UEFI on a Mac to enable USB boot isn’t possible. This feature isn’t available there.

You can utilize remaining space by installing Lubuntu Desktop via sudo apt install instead of replacing your system entirely.

It's hard to locate the BIOS/UEFI on the Mac. Thanks for the help! I've already reinstalled everything, but I'll remember this for later. Also, I realized in GRUB you can press C to open the shell and mount the USB without booting from it.
