Assist with router upgrade process.
Hey there, I'm trying to upgrade my router and need some guidance. I'm switching from a grey TP-Link to a black TP-Link, and the fiber modem is still the Fiberhome box. The issue is that when I connect the white cable from the TM's WAN port to the TP-Link's WAN port, I don't get internet access. From what I understand, the problem might be related to a setting in the Tether app (TP links).
Reject the connection through the unused port. (Assuming from the diagram, the modem functions as a router too.) Modem → wan → Router → LAN → TPLINK → Wi-Fi Since the modem is integrated into the router, it already uses that wan link internally. This setup works correctly: the TPLINK acts as a slave router or repeater, often called an Access Point. First, adjust the IP address for the TPLINK to avoid conflicts with the modem’s IP. Assign it 192.168.0.100 (or another number outside the modem’s DHCP range, just for example). If the modem is at 192.168.100.1, change it to 192.168.100.100. The third segment should match the modem’s. Place it on a regular port and enable Access Point mode in the TPLINK. Set the default gateway to the modem’s IP (192.168.0.1). Once configured, the TPLINK will receive internet via the modem. You can also assign a different Wi-Fi name for the TPLINK, allowing you to choose which router connects via Wi-Fi.
Just to clarify some things in case either of us are mistaken. The Black TP-Link is thr router i want to upgrade TO. The Grey Networks is the current router. The White Fiber home is the modem (i think) The current setup (White Fiberhome and Grey Networks) is as follows: In the fourth picture you can see a white ethernet cable coming out of LAN 1 on the White Fiberhome, that cable is currently connected to the the WAN port on the Grey Networks. This is how the wifi is right now. What i have tried to do: I pulled out the ethernet cable from the Grey Networks WAN port and put in Black TP-links WAN port thinking that it would be as simple as that. The TP-link works fine except when joining the network there is no internet access. The problem seems to be setting up the IP adresses part. I just wanted to clarify/\go over this again just to make sure neither of us are mistaken.
There could be a conflict where the TP Link shares the same IP as the modem. If both devices use the same gateway address like 192.168.0.1, communication might fail. IP addresses need to be unique across the network—home routers or modems typically have IPs such as 0.1, 1.1 or 100.1. You can connect it to either the WAN or LAN port, and it should function properly. The issue likely lies in the TP Link not receiving gateway information from the modem, possibly because it’s directing the PC to use the modem instead of the gateway. Do you know how to access the admin panel for the TP Link?
This device serves as a gateway (modem/router). Your setup includes DSL, and the phone line was a hint. Likely you need to connect via PPPoE.
Yes, you're allowed. If you're not sure about the app, you can also use the browser. Connect your phone or laptop to its Wi-Fi, and enter http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1. Use "admin" as both username and password if you want to change it, otherwise use the default. Look for "operation mode" and choose "access point." Set the connection type to dynamic IP. Insert your TP-Link into the modem's LAN port (avoid using WAN). This guide might be useful.
