Assist with boosting the I3-6100 to 3.7GHz
I am working on an i3-6100 at stock speeds (3.7GHz) using an ASUS B150M-C motherboard with a sufficient power supply. I just completed my build and don’t want to upgrade the CPU, even though it’s the main limitation for my current setup. I’ve done GPU overclocking before but never a CPU. I’m thinking about increasing it to 4GHz and would like advice on how to proceed. Please let me know the best way forward.
B150 boards restrict overclocking for a limited number of asrock h170 models on specific systems. They often need a z170 board and an older BIOS to function properly. For OEM systems, purchasing a new processor is far more cost-effective than buying an overclock-capable board and updating Windows.
For enhancing the performance of the Skylake i3, a Z170 board is recommended (otherwise you risk losing hyperthreading after overclocking). Various ASRock models can achieve this and many offer good value. Make sure to verify the available BIOS versions to activate SKY OC. Unless you're aiming for competitive benchmarks, a standard 3.7GHz i3 is sufficient for most titles. You might not fully understand the process of base clock overclocking, which could lead you into complications if you're not careful with your motherboard selection.
