I'm facing problems with my Xbox One controller while playing the first Assassins Creed. The tutorial doesn't clearly explain which buttons correspond to what actions, and pressing the right stick opens the pause menu. Anyone have any suggestions or solutions? I almost finished the game as a teenager when it launched, but now I'm hesitant because the controller didn't support basic controls from the start.

You can utilize controller emulators. They function in about 90% of games. For older titles, consider using JoyToKey or newer alternatives like TocaEdit. TocaEdit users often praise it for Assassins Creed I and II. If the emulator specifies an Xbox 360 controller, it should still operate with an Xbox One controller.

I also tried x360ce or using it last night, but it didn't work (right click on the thumb stick still opened the start menu, etc.).
For the first two games—both Assassins Creed and Assassins Creed 2—I'll use just the mouse and keyboard.
The main issue is that the in-game tutorial doesn't clearly specify which buttons to press (even on kb+m). It only mentions using button 0 for one thing, button 1 for another, and sometimes shift, e, f, etc. Now I understand what those buttons are after some trial and error, but I'd rather be told exactly what to press instead of guessing.
I might consider switching back to the controller when I reach Brotherhood/Revelations.

The automatically installed Xbox One controller driver may cause problems or may not work with Windows 10. You need to download and install the older 64-bit version, then set up a x360ce profile and place the x360ce.ini and xinput1_3.dll files into the installation folder.

I actually tried everything and it still didn't work lmao.
I've gone through and read several tutorials to figure out how to fix it, but nothing helped.
The only reason I'm really sticking with a controller is because I'm playing these using my Steam link on the TV in the living room from my couch—though that's changing once I get past Assassin's Creed 2.

If the device doesn't function, the next option is to switch to another controller. Occasionally, using a wired Xbox 360 controller helps in such cases. You can find one for $10 to $15 on eBay.

I think I'll stick with keyboard and mouse until I reach the games that properly support the controller as intended. Just need to finish the first two titles quickly, lmao.
Fortunately, this is the only series where I prefer using a controller over keyboard and mouse.
