Take your time to check out various options to confirm this works. I’ll update soon—don’t stress.
Even without a 21:9 monitor, you can still run at this resolution to test it.

I wanted to let you know that I successfully used the .exe with the non-Steam edition of the game.
First, thank you to MehRepublic for providing this solution. Now I can play the game without the annoying black bars interrupting me.
Just copy the 'steam_api.dll' and 'steam_appid.tx' from another Steam game into your Assassin's Creed III directory (where your AC3SP.exe is located).
Then update the 'steam_appid.txt' to '208480'.
These files are found in 'Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\ANY STEAM GAME\Binaries\Win32'.
I used the 'steam_api.dll' from Arkham City GOTY and everything functioned properly.
I hope this helps get the game back to working for you all.
