Hi, I just bought a used mobo for my old PC that was made in 2012. The board is an AsRock Z77 Pro 4. How much can I overclock the processor using this setup? My CPU is an i5-2500k with a Spartan cooler, and it costs about $13 from Poland.

They made two versions of that cooler with two heat pipes on each side, plus one version with four heat pipes on each side. The pro 4 is a cheap board, so it's not great for overclocking, but the 2500K usually goes easy to overheat. Depending on which cooler and chip you get, you might end up in the 4.0 or 4.2 range with the cheap (two heat pipes) model, and maybe even 4.4 or 4.6 with a better one. They all overclock differently so that could change. Back when I used mine, I hit 5.2 on water cooling with a Z77 Extreme 4 board. EDIT: I bought it new with a cheap GB Z67 board and clocked it to 5.0 on day one. Then after about three years the board started acting up, so I switched back to the Z77 and got it to 5.2 a few years later, then...

Hey, same board as me!! (except mine is mATX I guess) Each CPU is different. I see no reason why that board wouldn't be able to push it to the max.

yep, I can upgrade that old 8-year-old i5 processor up to speeds of 5 GHz using a better chip instead of the current one.

They made two versions of that cooler, each with two heat pipes on every side, and one version has four heat pipes per side to check out. The pro 4 is a cheap board so it's not great for going too high in speed, but the 2500K usually overclocks easily. Depending on your cooler and how good of a chip you have, you might get somewhere around 4.0 or 4.2 with the cheaper setup that has two pipes, whereas the better one could hit 4.4 or even 4.6. Every thing overclocks at its own rate so it will change depending on your specific parts back when I used my old cooler and water cooling system on a Z77 Extreme 4 board, I was able to hit up to 5.2. EDIT: I bought mine again with a low budget GB Z67 board and clocked it down to 5.0 for day one. About three years later the new board started acting weird so I replaced it with a Z77 and got it back to 5.2 after using the same voltage that made it run at 5.2 before. It's still working fine even though my son owns this PC now if the 10600K ever shows up in stock, they are going to retire it and give him my 4790K instead.

I checked my post if anyone else picked up that CPU and it might have already been run hard. My old card was actually a Z68, not one with a 67 on the name.

The pro 4 comes with a budget board that you can buy at Newegg for $30, which links to this page.

If you use a cooler, you could get 5.0, but that is too hard for this board.
