I possess the motherboard with an Xeon E3-1220 and am using SO-DIMM to DIMM adapters with SO-DIMM RAM. I have an 8GB Samsung M393B1K70CHD-YH9 PC3L-10600R ECC RAM available nearby. I'm wondering if it's feasible to install it, but when I tried I received a POST code of 53 regardless of the slot. Can this RAM be used in my system? I'd prefer to upgrade to standard DIMM, though DDR3 seems costly now, whether new or used.

It's feasible to operate certain ECC memory without enabling ECC, but running "x4" type RAM isn't supported by this CPU or motherboard. It's usually safer to skip "R" (Registered) memory on desktops. The label will show "2Rx4," meaning two x4 devices are incompatible; you should use x8 or x16 types. Edit: "2Rx4" means two ranks of x4 memory. The PC3L-10600R is DDR3L, 1333 MT/s, Registered. Most consumer intel boards lack registered memory support. ECC is typically used for that purpose.

To recap, I tested ECC memory on a P67 (B3) board with a 3770K processor.

Yes, there are exceptions. They become more frequent as machines age. There wasn’t originally a solid technical justification against supporting ECC, though that might change now. It was mainly about distinguishing consumer from enterprise boards. Back then, most systems could handle both. After Intel dominated the market with their core technology and entered a long period of dominance, consumer boards that supported ECC struggled significantly.

Is it feasible to install any ECC memory on this setup? I'm planning to use an E3-1275 Xeon and have 8GB DDR3 sticks, which are costly. I'm looking for affordable options right now. Thanks for the advice!

ECC memory compatible with LGA1155 is priced similarly to non-ECC DDR3, making it highly sought after for servers using E3 Xeon processors.

Yeah, I kind of figured, but wanted to ask anyway. Thanks for your help.
