ASRock A320M-HDV R4.0 and R7 5800XT quirks
he did some checking and saw that his motherboard now supports 5000 series chips, which is a big upgrade from the 2300x. he visited our nearby micro center and found a great deal on a 5800xt. after updating the BIOS, he booted into Windows on his 2300x and shut it down to replace the CPU. once the new chip was installed, it sat for about two hours. i suggested waiting as memory training can take a long time on an AM4 board. it stayed on with fans running, system lights blinking, and RGB staying on without any display or peripheral lights. now i wonder if the person at the micro center lied about the chip working or if something unexpected happened. the 5800xt doesn’t seem to appear in their supported list on their website.
It's located at the tenth position from the end. Did your colleague verify the BIOS version on the circuit after updating it to ensure it matched the correct BIOS? If it aligns with the right version, the next action would be connecting a buzzer to the speaker header to detect any malfunctions. Keep in mind, A320 boards are generally poorly constructed and often lack manufacturer support, making issues like this common. This particular board is notably among the worst for the A320. Also, due to the minimal VRM design, using more than four cores will likely trigger power throttling—essentially limiting performance to avoid damage. Even if it works, you probably won’t achieve the full potential of the 5800XT. You might want to check the FB marketplace for a B450 board with BIOS flashback for around $40, as chances are you’ll find one that functions reliably without such problems.
I share the same thoughts as @RONOTHAN##. The A320 and other A-series boards were primarily designed for CPUs with lower power consumption. They also don’t offer the tuning capabilities found in B and X chipset boards. Even some budget B450 models performed significantly better compared to their price point. Have you considered removing the CMOS battery to refresh the BIOS?
