You're just starting with PC gaming and owning an MSI GS70 laptop. You're wondering about using an external optical drive with a 3.0 USB connector. Most modern games can run without needing the disk constantly, but some older titles might require it for installation. If you do need to insert the disc during play, a 3.0 USB optical drive should work fine and won't be too slow compared to an internal drive. It should handle the task smoothly enough for a smooth gaming experience.

Typically games are downloaded from discs, but once they're installed the disc becomes unnecessary. The only titles requiring a disc are Oblivion and Morrowind, while the rest reside on my hard drive and operate from there.

And if you ever had concerns about the USB 3.0 connection to the external DVD reader, don't worry. It performs quickly enough for any task you give it.

The disc typically contains only installation files. After installing it on your hard drive, you can run the game normally. Most titles no longer needed a CD around 2007. I haven’t seen a game in years that required one. USB optical drives function perfectly, and ASUS offers some excellent options.

Typically, the code is found in the game box on the appropriate platform, such as BF4, where you can redeem it on Origin and download it if needed.

Thanks for all the guidance, I was planning to return the laptop due to this, but now I feel more confident. Ensure your laptop gets plenty of fresh air while gaming. Overheating parts often cause lag, so a cooling pad is a practical choice if you can find one affordable. It not only helps with cooling but also improves the angle of your display when using an external keyboard.
