I'm checking out the R9 290 for a new project and diving into Arma 3. I'm curious about the impact of missing PhysX and how it might affect gameplay or fun.

It won't be obvious that it's missing.

It's unlikely to be a noticeable issue, though it might seem like a big change compared to other settings. The performance drop was mainly due to lower frame rates. Just focus on your needs—getting a GPU is enough.

I'm unsure about whether that game includes physX, but I'd definitely pick a similar game that does have it over one that doesn't.

It might not seem significant at first.

It seems like you're making a strong statement. If you're not experiencing it, maybe you're not seeing it clearly.

I didn't see anything unusual in Mafia II, but I did notice my GTX 660 having trouble reaching over 22 frames per second while walking around. When I was driving, it worked smoothly at 60 fps, but I still didn’t notice any improvement. I’m not blind.

Arma 3 runs without relying on GPU-based physics or exclusive features. It stays light and operates solely on the CPU, independent of the graphics card.
