ARM Game Master 3 on an i5 6600K and RX 480 graphics card
Hey everyone, I just bought an RX 480 to swap in for my old HD 7870. It really boosted my frame rate in ARMA 3—now I’m seeing around 40 fps at best, but sometimes it drops to 15-20 fps during multiplayer. At medium settings, 60fps or higher on 1080p should be possible with today’s mid-to-high-end rigs. I’m using an A8-5600K and know AMD CPUs struggle with ARMA 3. I’m considering moving to an i5-6600K with 16GB DDR4 and overclocking it to 4GHz or more. Will that make a big difference? Should I still upgrade the old CPU even if my performance is decent in ARMA 3? Any tips would be appreciated!
At lower configurations, GPU consumption sits around 20% while CPU usage is near 80%, achieving roughly 40 frames per second. Switching to higher settings raises GPU load to about 40% and pushes CPU usage up to around 95%, dropping performance to approximately 20fps. Notably, AMD performs poorly with ARMA 3, and a similar i3-3220 with GTX 750 delivers only about 30fps on low settings.
It seems ARMA really values CPU performance. ;-) If you enjoy gaming, upgrading your CPU might be worthwhile. Your friend likely gets a smoother frame rate because their system isn’t limited by a weak processor. The main issue is your CPU’s single-core speed is poor compared to yours, which restricts overall performance. If cost isn’t a concern, an i5-6500 would be a solid choice. Otherwise, consider a 6600k or higher and try overclocking for better results.
The Altis map suffers from lag and slow performance mainly because of its large size. Stratis offers a more streamlined experience for less powerful systems. I haven’t tried the latest DLC yet to see how it affects gameplay. The most important factor in Arma is draw distance. According to what I remember, there are three settings you can adjust—one for walking, one for driving, and one for flying. Walking at 1200 is sufficient, 2000 for cars, and 3500 for planes. Grass matters little; the lower it is, the better visibility for spotting opponents hiding there. A CPU upgrade could make a noticeable difference. Even though Arma promotes high-end CPUs, they still seem to prefer them.
Arma thrives on strong CPU performance, and you'll see a big impact there
