I've been exploring a setup like Linus uses—placing PCs in another room and using a Thunderbolt cable for peripherals. The issue is that the Steel Legend supports TB3 but needs an outdated TB expansion card. I can buy TB4 cards on Amazon, though they don't seem to work with the Steel Legend. Intel TB cards are listed, but AMD options aren't visible. Since I'm new to Thunderbolt, I'm unsure if CPU matters or how much it affects the setup. My main question is: Can I still use a Steel Legend with Thunderbolt, and what kind of card would be needed? Example of a TB expansion card I've seen is...
Intel appears in that listing since all TB controller cards rely on Intel controllers. TB is a brand of Intel technology, no matter the motherboard or CPU you use. The Asrock TB3 AIC also uses an Intel chip. Regarding the Gigabyte card, I’m not sure. Implementing TB on AMD systems is problematic at best, especially with older models like X570 and needing an add-in card. TB on AMD isn’t reliable. Personally, I’d look for an alternative solution. Recently, Linus has switched to using an optical DP cable and USB over fiber extenders, completely avoiding TB.
Choose the optical HDMI/display port with active USB/USB over Ethernet choice. It’s significantly more affordable and performs better because it bypasses the cluttered desktop Thunderbolt setup. Linus picked this path for savings, simplicity, reliability, and flexibility.
