Hey everyone, I just finished assembling a new system and have some worries about the CPU temperatures. The setup includes a Ryzen 7 3800X with Corsair RM750X Gold, powered by an MSI X570 PSU, along with a Noctua NH-D9L cooler (stock 2000 RPM fan). I also have a Gigabyte Windforce GTX770 GPU and three intake fans plus exhaust fans. When the system is idle and CPU usage is low (3-5%), temps stay between 50-60°C. Under load, using Cinebench to hit full speed, they spike to around 85°C. I thought maybe the thermal paste wasn’t applied correctly, so I swapped out the cooler—it still works fine, just a bit older than a year. The paste used was Arctics MX-4. Are these temperatures normal? Should I expect 50-60°C at only 5% CPU usage? I’ve never run an AMD processor before, so I’m curious if they tend to get hotter. The case fans follow a curve: they start at 75% speed when temps reach 50°C and then rise further. I just want some confirmation before anyone else notices anything unusual. Please let me know if you have any tips or observations!
When performing regular but not intensive work, Zen 2 quickly overvolts the two fastest cores, letting them run faster than the others can. This creates a more responsive system but may cause slightly elevated temperatures for a CPU that isn’t heavily loaded. A temperature of around 85°C under load is normal. Ensure your BIOS is up to date and install the latest AMD chipset drivers. Then open Control Panel > Power Settings and enable the Ryzen Balanced Plan. Once done, you can relax knowing the CPU will handle itself.
In Zen 2, the focus should be on load temperatures rather than idle temperatures.
