Recently upgraded to a 3080 and a 1440p 165hz monitor, I'm experiencing unusual behavior. In certain games, my 3600x displays only one or two threads, nearly maxed out with the GPU at about 50%, yet I still maintain 165fps without problems. Other titles show 6 threads at 50-60% usage, with the GPU around 50%, but I consistently reach only 110-130fps, even when pushing the 3600x to 4.3ghz. Would upgrading to a 5800x help, or is 165hz fundamentally unattainable without switching to newer platforms?

Disable G sync in your monitor settings and Nvidia control panel. Gsync restricts the computer to display only enough frames to match the monitor's refresh rate. Being stuck at 165 fps on a 165 Hz screen seems to indicate it's working.

The 3600X creates a slight slowdown with the 3080. A 5800X3D would be more suitable. A 5700X offers a moderate improvement, but it's not a major leap. The 5800X3D excels significantly, especially when paired with Zen4, Intel Alder Lake, and nearing Raptor Lake performance. The 5800X is pricier than the 5700X yet delivers comparable results. The 5800X3D provides a huge performance boost, especially with its substantial cache. However, NVIDIA drivers still mainly use one GPU core for GPU tasks, which can cause the other core to struggle under heavy workloads. G-sync doesn't cap frame rates, allowing higher performance within the monitor's capabilities (e.g., 32Hz to 165Hz). NVIDIA Fast Sync avoids tearing when frame rates surpass the monitor's G-sync range. V-sync restricts frame rates, which isn't ideal.

Notice CPU performance differs across titles. In very demanding games like CP2077 or Spider-Man Remastered with RT, your 3600x might struggle to keep up. 3080 lags behind 6800 XT at 1440p, and your 12400 hampers the 6800 XT in those titles. Clearly, your GPU is being limited by your CPU. I’d recommend upgrading to at least a 5700x, ideally a 5800x3d. Gaming on a 5800x is not ideal—it works similarly to a 5700x but costs significantly more.

Yes, in certain games. Usually it checks if your GPU usage is around 80% or less sometimes, and upgrading can help. It doesn’t always cause issues, and you won’t notice a clear difference unless it’s significant.

5800x3d is fine, but I’m not keen on the current prices. Probably just going to have to wait a bit.

Retrieve the 5700x image and hold it.
