I'm dealing with an unusual storage setup problem... this has persisted for quite some time, especially after switching to Windows 10 from an older version. The issue appears when connecting USB drives like thumb drives, HDDs, SD cards, or DVDs. They appear in the disk manager but aren't shown in the "This PC" view. I can right-click and change the mounting path, but using a different letter like "D:" or "F:" works fine in the disk manager, yet the drive still shows up only there. When I switch back to "D:", the same behavior repeats—visible in the disk manager but not in Windows Explorer. This happens with any USB storage type. I haven't altered the drive letters for my internal SSDs because changing them could cause errors. While this is just a minor inconvenience, it would be helpful to find a solution. Right now, I rely on manually assigning the letter each time a USB device is connected, since Windows automatically tries the first available letter and often fails. The letter assignments aren't saved, so reconnecting the same drive requires repeating the process. I also tried checking drivers and resetting automount via PowerShell, but all technical support resources suggest similar steps for other drives. They mention updating drivers, which they confirm are current.

Under Win7 (IIRC) the drive "D:" was set aside for a DVD drive, possibly inherited from that setup. This could be relevant if you upgraded in place rather than installing a new system. EDIT: This remains speculative but may apply to similar cases found at https://www.techsupportall.com/fixed-sol...er-filter/

Radium_Angel shared their experience with an in-place registry fix they used initially. They removed both UpperFilter and LowerFilter entries from the registry, deleted all volumes to reset Windows, and are cautious about making more changes due to system stability concerns.

It's definitely a problem. I'm not sure about saying it, but getting a new installation could be what you're looking for.

Yes, I already remove all "Mounted Devices" from the registry. A better approach could be using the Ghostbuster tool to eliminate any ghosted USB devices.
