Title. How much of a better performance in games would I get if i switched to 3900x from 4690k? Is it worth it or should I wait until zen 3 is out? Also, I'd have to change my motherboard obviously and I've never done this. I know i have to do a fresh install after switching motherboards, so how does this work exactly? I know my windows product key and windows product ID numbers. Would I have to wipe my SSD with windows on it before switching motherboards?

Cleaning your SSD with Windows before installing a new system is not necessary and could be risky; it's safer to keep it clean. I use a 4690K with a 1070 SC, and even then I still feel CPU-heavy games slow down. Upgrading would be a good idea. If you decide to upgrade later, going to NVMe will probably only help slightly for everyday use. I’d consider a Ryzen processor and, if needed, an M.2 slot for NVMe in the future.
