Up until now I used a pirated copy of Windows from uTorrent. I’ve been using a temporary key and managed to save enough money for the full version. My concern is whether I need to erase my drive and reinstall a complete Windows installation, or if I can simply purchase a product key and proceed. Since I’m okay with reinstalling my programs after wiping the drive, the safer option would be to go that route.
It’s best to purchase a genuine key and begin anew. For me, I’m using a legitimate Windows 7 ISO and recently cleared the Authenticator with a tool. This is essentially a minimal form of unauthorized use. However, if I were to buy Windows 8, I’d start from scratch. You might be able to enter a key, but its performance could vary based on the cracking method used.
I was on the verge of purchasing it... thank you for the caution.
You shouldn't be required to do anything unless you obtain the genuine key and replace your old one; otherwise, it won't make any changes unless you purchase a professional version, which will then update Windows automatically through the Update Manager. You don't need to wipe your drive unless you're using a customized ISO of Windows, which I haven't tried. The official Windows ISO files can be downloaded legally from Microsoft at the provided link, though I haven't used it myself and therefore have no assurance of its reliability.
