I've got an overclocked 970 and it doesn't seem to need much. The case fans—two fronts and one larger back—keep things cool, or at least I haven't noticed anything unusual. If you're unsure, you can always monitor its temperature; anything below 95°C meets the official standard. For the WindForce 970, which has multiple fans, performance may vary depending on your specific setup.

You're right about the 970 throttle at 85C, but it's important to stay under that limit or miss the main point of the OC. It seems unclear what make/model your card is, which makes it hard for people to give an accurate answer on how far you can push it. Most 970s with a few well-placed fans should handle it easily and perform well.
