My 9700K @ 5.2Ghz CPU definitely limits the performance of my 4090 in certain games, but I planned to wait for Zen6 before upgrading until DDR5 became widespread. DDR4 remains quite affordable.

1| AM4 models are DDR4 compatible, while AM5 supports DDR5. For 12th, 13th, and 14th generation processors, the memory controller accommodates both types. You should consider a DDR4-focused motherboard; for instance, this one:
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z790-D-DDR4-rev-10
Keep in mind, avoid mixing RAM types to prevent instability problems.

The problem is with your frame rate right now.

Also 5500X3D, 5600X3D, 5700X3D, 5800X3D are compatible with DDR4 and PCIE 5.0 on all 12th, 13th and 14th generation Intel cores. This also relies on the motherboard and whether PCIE 5.0 is activated.

Don’t worry too much about pci e 4 versus 5. As observed, gamersnexus tested the 5090 in a pci e 3 slot and noted a difference between pci e 3 and 5 of around 1-4%. With a pci e 4 board, performance should be significantly better.

The 1% lows in STALKER 2 and GTA 5 improved performance. The FPS will drop significantly into the low 40s. Gsync seems to be the main factor preventing severe stuttering during these drops. Notably, neither the GPU nor CPU reaches near 100% usage at this point. In GTA V, the lag appears more like transitional delay. It might be the slower PCIe 3.0 bus that’s causing the issue, especially since my memory bandwidth exceeds 30GiB/s according to Windows.
