I've assembled several PCs and kept improving them over the past two years. After switching from the 8086k to the 3900x, my aim is a dedicated gaming machine. Recently, I realized my RAM needs are starting to worry me, especially during high-performance games. Here’s my current configuration. Right now, my RAM is on sale for $77.99. Please note this is suitable for 120fps gameplay, so intense titles like CoD and Gears 5 will push my memory usage higher. When playing CoD MW, I hit around 11GB, and Gears 5 behaves similarly. For games like Final Fantasy XIV, I’m using about 10GB during heavy sessions such as 24-man raids. With upcoming upgrades for PS5 players, it seems PCs are catching up too. As demanding games become more common, I’m questioning whether it’s time to upgrade. Should I move to 32GB RAM? I’ve hesitated because current titles don’t fully utilize the full 16GB, but the trend suggests it might be worth considering soon. Thanks for reading and for any tips you can offer.

I can see that being a thing. I've had this RAM since my 8086k build. It was always something in the back of my mind that I don't need the 32GBs yet. It's a tempting thing especially since the ram price is now half of what I had originally paid for it last year which making it even more tempting. With how prices for RAM was before it was always a no brainer to not even attempt it while prices were so high. I'll continue to think it over since the current price is a black friday price. It’s really affordable these days, so I thought getting another would be a good idea. But I’m convinced my graphics card is already struggling enough—it doesn’t require much VRAM. I didn’t test it closely, though. Even with higher settings and around 180fps, it still uses about 11-12GB out of the 16GB available.
I had to decide this myself just last week. Based on what I’ve seen in current games, there’s almost no performance difference between 16GB and 32GB of RAM in most cases. A few titles benefit more from extra memory, but none that I could find require it. I chose 32GB mainly because it’s a reasonable price point. I bought it for $135 for 32MB of DDR4 3600 CL16 RAM paired with my new Ryzen 3rd generation processor. The main reason was to ensure smooth multitasking—like running several tabs in the background—and to keep my system future-proof for at least three years while still delivering strong performance.
It's not very useful for gaming unless you're doing a lot of other things. It's also inexpensive. That's all.
