How's everything going? I'm at a decision point for a new purchase. Right now I own a MacBook Pro with Retina display, 15-inch size, Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, and 1536 MB graphics. I'm searching for a laptop that matches or exceeds my current specs. I'm planning to upgrade to a gaming PC after this, since I really enjoy gaming and have used an Asus ROG before. I'm weighing whether to upgrade or wait for the next MacBook Pro, as I tend to use it more for work than games. I also want the ability to play mobile games on the go.

The motivation behind this search started because my mother struggles with technology and still uses outdated devices like an iPhone 4 and a Windows PC. She's considering upgrading her setup, and I offered her my iPad instead of the Retina 64G Wi-Fi and MacBook Pro. She'll also get an iPhone 6 soon. If she had everything together, it would be perfect.

Personally, I'm thinking about swapping my iPad for a Surface 3 and getting a gaming laptop or updating my MacBook Pro. But I'm not sure what to do, so I thought you could help me out.

It really depends on your needs. The upcoming 15" retina display might offer a more powerful dedicated GPU, making it suitable for gaming. You could also consider a high-quality light "retina" gaming laptop such as the Aorus X3 Plus, or opt for a desktop setup.

You definitely need a laptop? A desktop with identical specifications would ruin the laptop.

980 is a solid choice for laptops with 8 GB of RAM. The GeForce GTX 980M offers good performance for gaming and multitasking.

You can choose between a laptop and a desktop, or opt for a single setup with both.

You're being offered a Surface... but why would you want another laptop-like gadget?

For tablet use I'd carry it with me (military).

as an SP3 owner... i wonder how long it’ll last in the field with you... the screen is pretty thin on them. Unless you’ve got that NFL-style surface finish case, then maybe.
