Are USB-C hubs suitable? What general advice should I follow?

I've only recently begun using devices with USB-C; yet I lack many compatible ports... that's why I'm considering a USB-C Hub.
But I've seen warnings in manuals about these products - they say charging performance might suffer, or even risk damaging the device, and possibly causing harm if a low-quality hub is used.
Am I just hearing them off the top of their heads?
I plan to invest only in reputable brands at fair prices for reliable items.
What are your thoughts?
Also, would it be acceptable to have one USB-C Hub per USB-C port on my PC or monitor?
Or should I limit myself to one hub per item?
Does this really matter?
I'm curious because I have one at the front and back of my PC tower, plus another in my gaming monitor/screen.
Could I use all three if needed?
What are the potential downsides or trade-offs when using USB-C Hubs (noting that I've never used any before)?
For example, would adding more devices share bandwidth and charging power?
Is there a maximum number of items a hub should support (like not exceeding 3 or 5)?
Are there specific wattage requirements to ensure fast charging for my phone and other gadgets?

in general, when using a hub of any kind, it's always beneficial to choose one with external power. connecting it to the wall guarantees it receives the necessary power for all connected devices. you can't expect a single port on your pc to suddenly power multiple devices—this just won't happen. another lesson i've learned over the years is that you get what you pay for. i don't opt for the expensive $50 hub, nor do I settle for the $5 one at the drug store checkout. instead, i choose a mid-range option around $15-20 (or whatever current pricing trends suggest) after thoroughly reviewing the details and comparing it carefully with other choices.
