Are there any unlocked CPUs available for my partially broken MSI X58 Pro-E?
I recently obtained an MSI X58 Pro-E with an i7 920 and a reliable cooler. The purchase clearly has some issues: two memory channels are damaged, and the bclk-ocing headroom is insufficient, only resetting to 133 MHz at startup. I’m curious whether there’s a suitable CPU—ideally with six cores—that can be overclocked via base clock since one channel is already limiting performance. Or would a custom BIOS update or professional repair be necessary?
Thanks in advance.
It might be the CPU memory controller that's faulty, leading to one channel not functioning, which seems more probable than the motherboard being damaged.
These models are the only first-gen 6-core CPUs besides the Xeons.
It might be the CPU memory controller that's faulty, leading to one channel not functioning properly. This seems more likely than the motherboard being damaged. The i7 980x and 990x are the only first-gen 6-core models other than the Xeons. The memory channels are operational with a spare Xeon X5650, suggesting the i7 920 is defective. It’s not costly to replace it initially. However, the bclk issue remains unresolved and bothers me a lot. Could this be related to the BIOS? I recall testing an X5650 on the same board model at 4.2 GHz (210 MHz x20) and later swapping it for a higher multiplier X5675. These six-core i7s are close in price to the Ryzen 5 1600, older, more power-hungry, and lack proper warranty. That won’t happen. I’m looking for a multi-unlocked Xeon or a fix for this problem. Any suggestions?[/strike]
