I own a Windows 11 laptop that was purchased new around six years ago. To sell it, I would need to perform a secure erase of the NVMe M.2 SSD using Parted Magic, then reinstall Windows from a fresh Windows 11 installation media. Would this mean I would require a product key to activate once installed? I understand that using the "Reset this PC" option in Windows would activate it online, but would it still work after a clean install? This device does not have a product key available to me.

The device was 6 years old in 2019 and didn't have Win 11 installed by default. Did you perform an in-place upgrade from Win 10? Is it now fully activated with Win 11? Home or Pro?

I performed an on-site upgrade from Windows 10. Now I only completed a reset via "Reset this PC" in Windows, and it hasn't been activated yet. There has been no internet connection at all before the reset. Prior to the reset, the system was fully activated.

When selling, a complete reset and reinstallation are essential. Either use Windows 11 or apply the Factory Reset that might remain in the system. The factory reset could return it to the original version of Windows 10. The 'reset' action may leave behind traces of your previous settings, depending on your selections.

I understand I should perform a complete reset and reinstall when selling. However, would activation still occur once online? I performed a reset using reset this pic with Windows 11 Home installed. Perhaps because I opted for the cloud download initially instead of a local one at the start of the process. I chose to remove everything and do a clean install, wondering how effective that is compared to tools like Parted Magic or the built-in secure erase utility in BIOS.

Regarding Parted Magic, I own the paid version on an SD card, but it hasn’t been used recently. When I try to boot from it, I receive a warning about verifying shim SBAT data failing and the laptop shutting down shortly afterward. Some users suggest this might be due to Secure Boot being enabled. I checked BIOS settings, and it’s active. However, I can’t adjust that setting. The Supervisor password option is emphasized, and only that part of the security section is editable. The arrow keys function elsewhere but not in the security area. Do I need to set a supervisor password before proceeding with other options?

It has already been activated, so it will start itself automatically once online. Cleaning and reinstalling is just as effective as doing it after a virus attack and keeping your system safe. No need for Parted Magic or any other software. It’s simply a brand new Win 11 USB installation to set up. Thusly: How To - Windows 11 clean install tutorial Windows 11 Clean install tutorial This guide aims to walk you through each step to carry out a fresh installation of Windows 11, version 23H2 or later, though it works well on older versions with minor visual differences but overall similar functionality... forums.

I considered whether a secure wipe followed by installation might work well because I intend to sell it later.

Sure, you're right. However, it's not essential.

I performed a fresh installation using a windows 11 usb drive. Now I’m puzzled (don’t take too much). After installing Windows 11 home, I checked Disk Management and saw that the Windows partition is marked as BitLocker encrypted. Why is it saying this? I’ve never enabled BitLocker on this laptop before. I assumed it was only available for professional models. Not sure if it was enabled before the reinstall.

I just got a new laptop with Windows 11 Pro, and it shows the same information in Disk Management. Again, I haven’t touched BitLocker at all.

Is the installation complete and properly activated? Was the system initially a Windows S version before being upgraded to Windows Home? If yes, then it was definitely configured with BitLocker.
