Are Gateron Jade switches releasing oil?
Are Gateron Jade switches releasing oil?
Hi everyone,
I just started making my first custom keyboard and noticed some lubricant seeping from the switches. I’m wondering if this is normal or if it’s something I should be concerned about. Also, what should I use to thoroughly clean the areas I touched with my fingers? Are there any switch models that don’t leak?
Thanks.

I believe there might be leaks from some of the switches, causing a mess. It seems the manufacturer may have skipped cleaning before shipping to cut costs. A faulty switch should be returned. Otherwise, the issue will repeat and the key may stop working.
Regarding the cause, the main concern is removing excess lubricant, which could affect performance and possibly void any warranty.
I’ll wait for advice from the keyboard building community.
In the meantime, reach out to the manufacturer – document and photograph the problem, submit your request, and ask for guidance. Keep your receipts, sales slip, etc.
Many of these prelubed switches come with a grease bath, similar to the spray grease products you might see. This isn't applied by hand as it would at home, since that's a time-consuming and expensive task. The grease usually drains out along with the rest of the carrier solution. Besides the inconvenience, it won't harm anything and the switches should remain intact. The grease used must be non-conductive. For cleanup, a damp microfibre cloth is sufficient; solvents or cleaners can harm surfaces.
When I use prelubed switches, I dry them with a clean paper towel, ensuring the switch is pressed down and the stem is cleaned. I also apply my own lubricant, though it requires additional tools and is more involved.
