Expectations are low for today’s technology, likely indicating a budget build. A solid 750W power supply from a reputable manufacturer would be ideal.
It's a 3rd gen i5 + gtx 960, so not really a modern system. I just took the whole system (which never had any issues) and moved it to another case -- with the exception of upgrading my older gtx 660 with gtx 960. Although I am not sure if it is causing this particular issue, I generally agree on the PSU. Furmark crashes (without crashing the box) on 1080p within about 15 seconds, but NFSMW @ 2560x1440 perfectly stable & smooth as butter. I guess I will just keep an eye on it...
This setup works well on a 400W power supply, even with a third-generation i7 and an 1060. If the problem persists, it could be a one-time occurrence. I’d still verify the front panel IO connections to both the motherboard and the IO board. It’s possible the connector on the front IO board disconnected during shipping, leading to a weak link that might cause movement and short circuits when connecting peripherals.
Agreed on the wattage, but I’m not sure this 9-year-old PSU is in good condition right now. I verified all the IO to MB connections, but your idea about checking the board inside is a great one. Thanks for the suggestion—I’ll take a look. There were hints that this case might have been someone else’s—like some extra screw marks where none should be. It makes me think an FP IO issue could really warrant returning the case. Maybe just swapping that assembly would help?
It seems the IO panel might actually be replaceable. I checked and adjusted the screws holding the assembly, but they were already snug. Swapping back the front panel worked fine. I also noticed I installed the PSU incorrectly—fan pointing toward the solid front panel.
Absolutely, someone should reach out to Dr. House about this situation. Adjusting the PSU has lowered my idle GPU temperatures from 55°C to 45°C. This particular card tends to stay off its fans by default.
Adjust GPU driver settings to customize fan defaults. Setting them by default isn't ideal for performance needs.
