Yesterday I completed a successful upgrade of my old Dell XPS 8500 into a SAMA IM01 case, paired with a GTX 960. Everything functioned well, but there was an unexpected issue: when testing the front IO panel with a USB stick, the system froze and shut down after roughly 10 seconds. After restarting, USB worked perfectly—now I’m using one of the front ports with a wireless keyboard receiver. The same happened once with the front audio jack, but no problems since then. Only the power button and FP LED connectors are unique to this Dell motherboard (and their pinouts are well documented), while the rest are standard. Living in a very dry climate, I suspect static electricity built up in the connectors, which I somehow cleared by connecting devices properly.
You meant me when you touched that device or the computer? It was a straightforward assembly, so I’m unsure what might cause a grounding problem. The motherboard is securely placed on the stands, and I don’t see anything loose. Before connecting everything, I swapped the PSU fan for a quieter model (about one-third of its power), and it’s running smoothly. I also needed a short cable for the 4-pin CPU power connector—something spare that I could test if the problem returns. The only details I remember are: about ten years ago, a printer was plugged into one of the USB back ports, causing a huge power surge that damaged the port and made the PC freeze when anything was connected. That issue was fixed by avoiding that USB port, which I haven’t used since. Still, none of these explain the audio jack freezing.
I understand you're not against replacing Dells PCs, but you still have a low storage space. A common oversight during upgrades, particularly with budget models, is the power supply unit (PSU). Another factor could be misaligning the pins on the connector—making sure the + goes to + and - goes to -.
That would definitely trigger this problem each time, right? I mentioned it once before, and after that it worked normally again. Turning the LED polarity around didn’t stop them from lighting up, but they did!
