Imagine I have a MacBook Pro linked to two external storage devices. Drive A is a 1TB HDD for personal files like photos and videos, while Drive B is a larger 2TB HDD used for backups. The question is whether Time Machine can back up both drives simultaneously. Some users on Reddit mentioned issues with Apple’s Time Machine working poorly with NAS or time capsule setups. It seems the compatibility depends on configuration and settings. People who use Time Machine often connect their Mac to external drives rather than relying solely on NAS solutions. How does this setup work in your experience?

In the Time Machine settings you have the ability to include or exclude folders, which means you might want to attach an external drive, even if I haven't used it before.

I previously used a 4th Gen Apple Time Capsule before its power supply failed. My Linksys router has a USB port, and I want to connect a drive enclosure to support my new MBP with TimeMachine, though I don’t really need it. I’ve never experienced issues with my Macs, so why would a NAS drive dedicated to TimeMachine cause any problems?

I've been using my laptop since 2013. Recently, the GPU has started to cause problems from time to time... To be safe, I connect it to an external hard drive that I use as a backup.

It seems Nvidia's graphics chips often face reliability issues after several years. It might stem from the chip itself or the connecting logic board. Personally, I believe Apple shifted to AMD graphics because their performance in GPUs looks much better.

I'm using a 2012 non-retina MacBook Pro with an iGPU. Many users have reported similar problems like screen tearing and random freezes. We all ran the Apple hardware test twice—once at home, once in-store—but no issues were found. Other Reddit users had the same experience. When I disconnected from an external monitor, it was the only time I encountered this. Also, videos on full screen (YouTube, Twitch) would pixelate. These occurrences happened randomly and intermittently.

The iGPU issue can only be resolved by replacing the CPU, but because they’re soldered together, it seems impossible to fix. Five years of use is decent, yet it’s disappointing that it’s failing so soon.

Yup. The other day when I was in the apple store I was like: "okay... I know that there is something wrong with my machine, hardware or software wise. I just want to let you guys pinpoint the issue for me also because my laptop is already out of warranty. so, if this is a hardware issue for sure, I would have to buy a new one." Then the staff wiped my hard drive, did a clean install of the system and told me if those issues still occur, then you have a dying iGPU in your machine. And we do not encourage you to repair it cos we need to swap out your logic board and it is not worth the 500$ price tag.

They're probably right. Swapping out a 5-year-old machine's logic board isn't really worthwhile unless you can't afford more than that. It might be time to consider upgrading to a Retina version, maybe something from 2015?
