Melee shatters the EVO 2014 entry record and crosses into the four-digit range! Impressive for such a young title. Check out the live stream at Twitch.tv/VGBootCamp — if you haven’t seen competitive Melee before, give it a try.

Great! I'm excited for EVO to reclaim the lead and continue the momentum.

That's a huge number of participants. It shows how extensive the competition is.

Not super familiar with the setup yet, but in B.E.A.S.T. 5 last weekend they ran 8 out of 16 player mini brackets as pools. Since it's all direct competition, it works well and remains a reasonable method for selecting players. I've been following this series for over a year now and must admit it's more entertaining to watch than other fighting games. More intense action, less downtime. I swapped my usual weekend sleep schedule to catch the Beast 5 finals, which were dominating the Twitch front page with nearly 20k viewers.

Melee and Project M are both highly competitive titles—occasionally they bring back some lighthearted moments, though much less intense than in Brawl and Smash 4. The abundance of movement choices in these games adds a lot of excitement when played at the top level.
