AORUS Z790 ELITE AX rev 1.1 experiences BIOS stutter or freeze issues.
TDLR: The AORUS Z790 ELITE AX with BIOS updates causes stuttering on i9-13900kF and 3080 GPU. Hello! I recently upgraded my custom setup to the latest Intel 13th-gen chips. As mentioned, I purchased a new AORUS Z790 ELITE AX motherboard paired with an i9-13900kF and used my old 3080 for the GPU. I also installed fresh DDR5 RAM (Kingston Fury 4x32GB at 6000MT/s CL36-38-38) to fully utilize the new CPU. Surprisingly, during BIOS setup the interface freezes or lags at low frame rates. I changed to version FDa, toggled XMP/EXPO, and even reset the BIOS by removing CMOS while the power was off—this resolved the problem and refreshed the BIOS. My CPU is running at a solid 38C in BIOS, so I’m unsure what’s behind the issue. Could it be related to the CPU lacking integrated graphics and the GPU video output not functioning properly? I’m certain the GPU worked perfectly in my previous system. Should I replace the motherboard or the CPU? Thanks ahead! New setup on Windows 11, after the boot times were long, it actually started twice when I wasn’t doing stress tests. Yes, as mentioned, I already reset the CMOS by taking out the battery.
I’ll attempt it but the RAM is under the D15, so I’d need to take it out to have just one stick. I also don’t have enough thermal paste on hand to reapply it correctly afterward.
I believe the issue lies with our gigabyte boards and their handling of RAM. I own an Aorus Elite AX, but it struggles to run early DDR5 at 5200 MHz with four sticks. Two sticks work perfectly, but four seems challenging for Intel and AMD memory controllers. Many gigabyte boards appear to make it even harder.
I plan to receive another z790 from another maker at the same time, possibly from ASUS or MSI because I know their BIOS well. With half the parts already returned, what should I choose for the cooler if the best air-cooler isn't sufficient? Since I've used air cooling before, what kind of cooler would you recommend?
Thanks for the update. You're considering another motherboard brand with better support under $500, especially models from Asus or MSI. The G790 chipset is known to be expensive, so you might want to look at alternatives like the Z790 or other budget-friendly options from those brands.
